Freshmen: Are You Lost In The NUS Sports Arena? by Chua Kee Peow It's that time of the year again! Yes, it's the start of a new academic year and more freshies are joining our beloved university. Of course, there will be usual orientation camps, familiarization tours, course lectures, and so forth But any wannabe Armchair Quarterback will be more concerned about sports life in NUS. No worries, we at Aspire Sports are here to lead you through the NUS Sports Arena. First of all, anxious first-years who are interested in finding more about the various types of sports and facilities available in NUS can access the Sports and Recreation Center's (SRC) website. On the site, you will be able to find out the facilities available for bookings (e.g. tennis courts, badminton courts etc) as well as obtain the contact numbers and e-mails of the service staff on hand to help you with your sporting needs. Those interested in trying out new sports can also check with the NUS Sports Club, who have a large variety of sports on offer, such as canoe polo, windsurfing, and so forth, on a non-competitive level. For the less tech-savvy, there is always the "old economy" way, i.e., to make the trip down to the various notice boards in the SRC. As you step onto campus for your matriculation at the Multi-Purpose Sports Halls (MPSH), you will pass by a stress of dark tunnel where most sporting clubs will have their notice boards. Another good sport to look for sporting activities is at the main entrance where notices for trials and selections for the varsity teams are often posted. Do note however that few actually check the notice boards for information, and even fewer of the notices are actually updated! So be forewarned Picture
Caption: Another good way is to get a few friends to come with you during the matriculation fair (or you can always crash your friends' matric fair) and sign up for the various activities or selection trials available. Finally, after participating in all the activities in school, you will also want to keep abreast of all the sporting news in and outside of NUS and Singapore. That service will be brought to you by the Armchair Quarterbacks at Aspire Sports! So don't forget to check out our website regularly for updates and information on sports. We'll slog our butts off to bring you the latest and juiciest news in the sporting world. Why wait? Start checking out the sports in NUS now!
